To prepare it for his Spring 2011 show, Phillip Lim filled the Park Avenue Armory with a field of gargantuan, crafty carved knickknacks. Mildly resembling the long-lost pieces of a giant’s jigsaw puzzle, each prop looked as though it belonged in an M.C. Escher drawing. And somehow, these sharp yet smooth runway garnishes were the ideal accompaniments for the designer’s clever dreamy-with-a-pinch-of-Mod looks:

Skewed, defined layering in taupe, black and white was an enticing geometry experiment.
Pops of azure, in the form of leather smocks or tassel-belted silk tuxedo trousers, were playful and ever-so-slightly prep.
Organic twiggy prints and textures mixed with grid embroidery on sheer fabrics transformed ladylike dresses into optical mazes.
Perforated leather and a parade of polka dots made for the chicest of circle games.
Slouchy, cool silhouettes sent out between feminine prim-and-proper shapes epitomized the all-encompassing Lim woman.
